News from the Counselor

News from College & Career Academies of Akron

  • All 9th grade learners will attend a Career Expo on Friday, January 28th, in the STEM gym. Partners from business and industry as well as the military will be on-hand to provide an avenue for learners to explore a variety of career options to help make an informed decision about their future and pathway choice. 

  • During the following week, all 9th grade learners will select one of three pathways as their focus for the next three years at STEM: Biotechnology, Cybersecurity & Network Defense, or Environmental Engineering.  Learners will fill out a pathway application with Coach Grandison and course requests will be determined for their schedule of classes for the next academic year.

Junior and Senior learners are eligible to receive an ACT Fee Waiver. Any learner who is interested in taking/retaking the ACT to improve your score, complete the form ACT Fee Waiver Request Form. Students are eligible to use up to four (4) separate fee waivers. Shortly after completing the form, you will be issued a voucher number with detailed instructions on the registration process. Attention all student-athletes interested in playing collegiate sports!!

Please join the NCAA Eligibility Center on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time for our webinar for college-bound student-athletes and their families. Students will learn about the latest initial-eligibility news, requirements they must meet to be ready when they get to campus, and the best resources for them as they pursue their dreams of studying and competing at an NCAA Division I or II school. Ohio Business Week Program

 

Ohio Business Week is a week-long program providing high school students with an opportunity to collaborate with peers from across the nation to practice tackling authentic business challenges while also having a real college experience. The program will be held in person July 10-16, 2022. This opportunity is available to all current high school students. The cost is between $499-$599 but financial assistance may be provided for those eligible. Please contact Cory Dippold for more detailed information at cory@ohiobusinessweek.org.

CONGRATS!

STEM Robotics Teams 60883 C,D,F,X,Y,Z have all made the

tournament portions of competitions this year, still looking for

that first win.  Team D has won an Excellence Award, Amaze

Award, and been Skills Champions at every competition they

have attended so far.  Their Skill Score has ranked inside the top

10 in the World all season and peaked at 2nd in the world!  Teams D, X, Y, C are all ranked in the top 20 in Ohio with their Skills Ranking.

 

STEM Esports sent two teams to the Esports Ohio Northeast Regional held at the Cavs Legion facility in Cleveland. Both teams performed well and took home 2nd place plaques for Fortnite and Overwatch respectively. Both teams ended up losing to the eventual state champions, Shaker Heights, in tough finals matches. 

Senior Info!

  • Seniors will be celebrating completing their first semester of the 2021 -22 school year by having a week dedicated only to them.   Senior Week will start Dec 6- 10, where seniors will have a different theme each day of the week. 

    • Monday is “White Lie Day”

    • Tuesday is  “Anything but a backpack''

    • Wednesday is “College Spirit Day”

    • Thursday is “Senior Citizen Day”

    • Friday is “Senior Mums Day”.  Seniors will be receiving their senior t-shirts that week too and wear them on Friday, Dec 10.  Right before dismissal on Friday, underclassmen will give the seniors a clap out as they leave the building.

  • After winter break, the seniors will start off the year with their Senior Breakfast in the cafeteria on January 7th.  

  • Lastly, seniors voted on their prom theme and colors.  The theme is the “Enchanted Forest” with colors, purple, blue, forest green and gold.  Attendees do not have to wear those colors to attend the prom.  Prom will be on April 29th.  More details are to come in the next few months.

NHS!

  • The following students were inducted into the NIHF STEM High School Chapter on November 10.  Maddox Graham, David Grubb, and Richard Howiler.  Please congratulate them as they have demonstrated their dedication to learning, but also to their school and community.

Student Council donated over 400 cans and raised $160 in the Canned Food Drive paired with the Pie a Coach in the Face event!
